Tropical Storm – Chantal

Update: July 10, 5:00pm

  • As of 5pm, Chantal has weakened into a tropical wave.  The National Hurricane Center is no longer issuing advisories regarding the storm.

Update: July 10, 9:35am

  • Although much uncertainly remains in the storm’s forecast, at this time significant impacts are not expected for the UF campus and surrounding areas.  No changes to UF’s operations or schedule are anticipated.
  • Tropical moisture from Chantal will begin to increase Friday into Saturday and continue through the weekend.  The 5-day rain outlook from NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center indicates approximately 1-2 inches of rain are possible between today and Monday.
  • This morning’s official forecast track brings Chantal just off the NE Florida Coast Saturday into Sunday as a tropical storm/depression.  Please note models are in disagreement regarding the storm’s path and the current track has a low degree of confidence as indicated by the National Hurricane Center.  The storm is forecast to move over Hispaniola later today and be near the east coast of Cuba on Thursday. 
  • A significant chance exists that the storm will further weaken into a tropical wave and the National Hurricane Center may discontinue advisories on Chantal later today.
  • UF units should continue to monitor Chantal for changes.

Update: July 9, 11:00am

  • Uncertainty remains in terms of any specific impacts from Chantal to the UF campus and surrounding areas.  However, the University community is encouraged to continue monitoring the storm.
  • This morning’s forecast from the National Hurricane Center brings Chantal just north of the Bahamas early Sunday as a tropical storm.  Please note the 5-day forecast error cone includes most of the Florida East Coast.
  • Currently Chantal is near the Lesser Antilles and forecast to move over Hispaniola on Wednesday.

Update: July 8, 10:00am

  • The University of Florida is monitoring Tropical Storm Chantal, currently located in the central Atlantic.
  • Uncertainty exists in the long range forecast; however, the National Hurricane Center forecast brings Chantal near the Bahamas as a tropical depression this weekend.
