Jared Sweat will receive his master’s degree in soil and water science during commencement this weekend, but his path to the degree was interrupted by a bout with stage IV Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

After 12 treatments of chemotherapy in six months, Sweat, 24, has been in remission since Dec. 29. He was close to finishing his degree when diagnosed and was set on finishing despite the setback. He has grown to love teaching during his time here and hopes to eventually receive his doctorate and teach at the college level.
